KABUL — Afghanistan’s national boxing team departed for Sri Lanka on Sunday to compete in the Asian Boxing Championships, which are set to begin this week in the capital, Colombo.
The tournament, hosted by Sri Lanka, is scheduled to start on Monday and will bring together boxers from across the continent.
Prior to their departure, the Afghan team held a training camp in Kabul to prepare for the event. The delegation includes five athletes competing in three weight categories, along with two coaches.
The participating boxers are Abdullah Qayoumi, Mojtaba Sharifi, Firdaws Najibi, Mubsir Qateh, and Oman Hotak. Afghan sports officials expressed optimism about the team’s performance, despite limited resources and training facilities in the country.
Afghanistan has continued to take part in international sporting events even amid domestic political uncertainty and restrictions under Taliban rule, with athletes often competing in challenging circumstances.
