Storm injures 25 in eastern Afghanistan

JALALABAD, Afghanistan — A powerful storm swept through the eastern city of Jalalabad on Thursday, injuring at least 25 people and causing widespread property damage, according to local Taliban officials in Nangarhar Province.

The storm damaged homes, commercial properties, and infrastructure across several neighborhoods in the city.

Local sources said two telecommunications towers, a solar power system, and a local radio station were among the key assets damaged.

Residential windows, household items, and shop inventories were also damaged in multiple districts.

The injured were transported to the provincial public hospital in Jalalabad for treatment. Taliban did not provide further details on their conditions.

Thursday’s storm adds to a pattern of extreme weather events in the region. In July last year, a similar storm in Nangarhar killed 25 people and injured more than 230, raising concerns over the vulnerability of local infrastructure and the limited capacity for emergency response.
