KABUL, Afghanistan — Iran and Pakistan deported or repatriated a total of 4,481 Afghan families between April 24 and May 2, according to data compiled by Amu from Taliban statements.
Of that number, 2,813 families were deported from Pakistan and 1,667 from Iran.
Details of the return routes show that 1,480 families entered Afghanistan through the Torkham crossing, 1,325 through the Spin Boldak border, and eight through the Angur Ada crossing in Paktika province.
From Iran, 582 families crossed into Nimroz province via the Silk Bridge crossing, 1,003 entered through Islam Qala in Herat, and 83 came through the Bahramcha border in Helmand province.
Separately, Taliban reported that at least 387 Afghan nationals held in Pakistani prisons were released and returned to Afghanistan through Spin Boldak between April 23 and May 2.
However, the Taliban did not release the total number of Afghan citizens recently freed from Pakistani jails.
These developments come as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees says approximately 3.5 million Afghan migrants have been returned from Iran and Pakistan — both voluntarily and forcibly — since the start of 2023.
